I have ceased serious development on this app about 10 months ago, and I have just pulled the app from the App Store. The Google Finance API (the main data source that GFolio uses to sync your portfolios), has been officially deprecated since May 26th, 2011, and service will be cut off on October 20th, 2012.

I am not sure what the future will be for the app itself, but it’s not looking good. I have investigated the possibility of making a portfolio service myself, but it’s not looking very hopeful. If I do decide to go through with making a new portfolio service, it will most likely be a different product from GFolio.

I would like to thank my loyal customers for these years of continued support and usage, and I hope that you’ll be able to use my new portfolio service (if it does decide to materialize).

There’s a lot to catch up on: First, I have lowered the price of GFolio to $2.99 USD. Second, coinciding with the price drop, I have decided to stop selling the free version of GFolio.

Third – this is a big one – is news from Google. Google says that the Google Finance Portfolio Data API – the way GFolio accesses your financial portfolios – has been deprecated. Immediately, there will be no effect – Google has no plans to shut down the service; they have just decided to end development. This means that GFolio will function as expected for the time being.

I am currently investigating the possibility of starting a GFolio API to manage portfolios. If I do choose to take this path, your portfolios will be transferred seamlessly and continue to work as expected even in the event that Google decides to shut down the Google Finance API.

In addition to minor bug-fixes, GFolio 2.3 introduces local caching. Local caching means faster loading times, and you will be able to view your portfolios and positions even when there’s no Internet connection.

Another minor feature in version 2.3 is in-app e-mail support – if you are having problems, or you just have a suggestion, you can e-mail me directly from GFolio.

A complete list of new features in 2.1:

• Tap the “QuickView” description to change it, without having to go into the Settings page.
• More data from Yahoo! Finance is available (enable/disable the data you need in the Settings page)
• News feeds – related to individual positions and also general market news.
• GFolio now handles closed positions (positions with a share count of zero) much more cleanly.

The native iPad app for GFolio is taking much longer than expected, and is still under heavy development. Thank you for your continued patience.

GFolio for iPad is in the works as well, I haven’t decided whether GFolio for iPad will be merged into the existing GFolio for iPhone to be a universal app, or if it will be a separate app.

In regards to comments, specifically international profiles; I’ve been testing some securities in currencies other than the U.S. Dollar, and it seems like the Google Finance engine is converting these values to the U.S. Dollar (using the current conversion rate). I will look into this more concretely in the 1.5 release.

As for showing current value and percent change, there is simply not enough room… when the iPhone is vertical. The 1.5 release will show the current value and percent change when it is put sideways in “landscape mode.”

[EDIT]: As of April 5, GFolio 1.4.3 is available in the App Store.

GFolio 1.4.1 fixed a strange crash that would happen occasionally, and corrects a spelling mistake (my bad!)

GFolio 1.4.2 was just submitted to the App Store review process, and should be available in a week or so. This minor version update fixes a crash that occurred sometimes when returning to the main menu before the profile has been fully loaded.
